The world today is experiencing pollution as a major problem. Both large and small scale pollution of the environment is happening around the world. Efforts to reduce and restore the environment from pollution are pursued in many avenues. Environmental remediation refers to the process by which contaminants and pollutants are removed from the environment. This process is undertaken in various settings, including sediments, surface water bodies, air, groundwater, and soil among others.

People who do the work of remediating the environment are referred to as environmental remediators. These professionals have a wide range of responsibilities and duties in their line of work. The goal of this field is to remove pollutants in the environment so as to make it safer for human occupation. Sometimes the pollutants are removed so as to give way for development projects.

The pollutants that remediators handle in most cases are generated by industrial companies through their production operations. When these companies relocate to a new location or go out of business, they leave behind wastes. Most of the pollution happened before laws and standards to protect the environment were established. Even though laws have been set to protect the environment, there are still some companies that go against them.

Cleaning operations can vary a lot in their size from very small operations to huge ones. Small operations may involve activities such as cleaning a pollutant spill. On the other hand, large scale operations need the supervision of the Federal Government for them to be completed. The Federal Government supervises such projects through the EPA.

The kind of job done by professionals in this field makes a career in this field a noble course. One is able to protect other humans, plants and animals from pollution when they work as remediators. Serious pollution can be caused to underground water reserves or surface water masses by certain pollutants when they seep through the soil or runoff. When one consumes such contaminated water, serious health problem can result.

Remediators work to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the first place. They hold all companies and individuals accountable to their actions and part in degrading the environment. There are many positions in the field of remediation that one can work in. Some of them include hazardous materials removal worker, environmental engineers, conservation scientists, and compliance officers among others. This provides a chance for growth in this career.

For the work of an environmental remediator to be successful, one may decide to work alone or as part of a team of remediators. Planning and quick action need to be balanced delicately in this line of work. Damages to the environment can be rectified using various procedures and strategies. Since the projects are usually different from each other, each job has to be planned well before it is implemented.

As a remediator, one is expected to read current literature and research surrounding techniques and issues involved in removing pollution. One also needs to understand various laws and standards that govern the way companies and individuals interact with the environment. There is also a lot of research involved in this field that remediators must do when working.
