Only the truly ignorant will still deny the fact that the earth is in very serious trouble. If the earth is in trouble then everything and everybody that depends upon the earth for a sustainable living environment is also in trouble. Yet humankind continue to waste precious resources and in the process they pollute the air, water sources and the very soil that must produce food. All is not doom and gloom, however. Erosion control companies do much to prevent and to repair damage.

When the fertile top layer of soil is removed, the remaining soil is extremely vulnerable to eroding agents such as the wind and water. This remaining soil is not fertile and cannot support vegetation. This means that it cannot serve as a habitat for birds, insects, wildlife and indigenous plants. Furthermore, such sites are very vulnerable to landslides and mudslides that cause even more damage to the surrounding soil.

Humans simply cannot survive if there is not enough fertile soil available. Ongoing construction and the irresponsible use of fertile land have seen to it that less and less land remains available for the production of crops, for creating safe havens for fauna and flora and for grazing. When planning to alter or disturb the soil in any way, whether for farming of commercial reasons, it is vital to study the likely effects such disturbances will have.

Much can be done to prevent, or at least limit the damage caused to the soil by human endeavours. One of the simplest and most effective steps is to make sure that the vegetation at the site is not completely destroyed, or that new vegetation is established and maintained soon after disturbing the site. Vegetation helps to bind the soil and to prevent rain and wind to cause further damage.

Businesses that specialize in this field can use a wide variety of techniques to make sure that the soil is not damaged and to prevent water, wind and mud to sweep away valuable top soil. Sandbags are used to create buffers and terraces in order to allow new vegetation to become established. Many sites are protected by specially designed wind barriers and silt barriers are used to prevent landslides and mudslides.

Experts in the field of soil protection van be of invaluable service to all developers. They can help their clients to act responsibly and to commence their activities with the minimum negative impact on the environment. Farmers, for example, spend a lot on the clearing and preparation of new fields. An expert can help them to make sure that the new fields will be sustainable and not simply become fallow land within a few years.

Many countries have introduced laws that aim to protect the environment against unscrupulous development. In most cases, developers have to submit an environmental impact assessment before they are allowed to continue with their plans. Critics reckon that these laws have no teeth and that very few developers are ever prosecuted for causing harm to the environment. They are calling for much stricter regulations.

Environmental experts have long warned that mankind is busy destroying the planet by selfishly exploiting scarce resources. If drastic steps are not taken to limit the negative impact that man has on the environment, then a monumental catastrophe is just around the corner. There is nowhere else to go.
